It's almost the end the end of October, and the trees are showing off their most colorful dresses. There is a bit of nip to the air in the morning, but by afternoon I'm still able to run about in short sleeves.  There is a bit of joy in the air over our weather, and I spend some of the time working on the yard trying to clear some things and get some ground ready for - yet another attempt - at a garden.

We are as prepared for winter as I can get with four tons of wood pellets in our garage, some additional insulation placed.  I've not done as much as I would have liked or have wanted but old addictions and my own lazy nature have stood in the way.   At least I'm back to moving forward now.  Depression can be a horrible thing, and I've suffered from it most of my life in one form or other.

My job is a steady, and the work is not hard, although I never figured that I would end up where I did, life has always had a tendency to blow me about to where I was needed.

While Susan and I are not in the same financial position that we were in the past, we have like most Americans, suffered under the crushing economic conditions as everyone else has this past year or so, I feel that we are, at least, in a better condition than most.   As long as we are able to hold off some bad luck and have no additional surprises, we should be able to move forward.

There is much that has not been covered or discussed, but let's just say that we are both healthy, wiser and moving forward.  We have plans for the future regarding the yard and while some things did not work out, I believe that I have lost both my Bur Oak and yet another apple tree to the deer, I'm changing up things a little.   I did make some progress against the multiflora rosa's that infest parts of my backyard but that will be an ongoing battle.  One that I've no doubt that I will lose in the end, but I'll be long gone by then.

It will simply become someone else's problem.

It's best that we move slowly, and we have managed to get a lot done once we start moving, but that biggest issue is motivation.

My legacy simply will be smaller, more modest but it will be something.   That's really all we can ask in the end.

What all the cool kids are reading.

In praise of the simple pumpkin. It has a lot of potential other than pies.

As I write this the temperature is climbing.  We have a window or two open, knowing that soon enough we will be shutting up the house for the next three months or so we can protect ourselves and our cats against the onslaught of winter.   Our wood stove burned overnight to take the chill out of the air and I found myself buying new boots and gloves and driving home with the windows down. This is the nature of autumn in Western Pennsylvania and as I sip on my pumpkin flavored coffee, I cannot help but praise the fruit of the season, and yes it is a fruit, the simple pumpkin. A few things are still growing in our garden, the last of the herbs and tomatoes...a stray pepper or two that needs to be picked.  Yet I find myself interested in growing pumpkins next year after realizing their potential and that they are high in nutritional value.   It's easy to forget in our modern world just how easy we have it as compared to our great grandparents and their grandparents....

Dopamine fix and my take on AI.

When I sat down at the computer recently to type all of this out,  I let out frustrated sigh.    I had plans to release a completely different blog post long before this date but over the last two weeks or so I've done everything I could do but actually work on the yard, or write, or just do anything that was constructive. When you are moving towards a dream or an idea or...well anything really, you can't break the chain.  Even if it's just 10 minutes a day working, that is constructive.    I have an addiction.  It's not to drugs or alcohol and in a way that would be a bit more excusable.   I have an addiction to dopamine .    Dopamine simply is a chemical in your brain that makes you feel good, and it in turn unleashes other "pleasure" chemicals in your brain.  In my case it a program called Second Life,  (SL) which honestly, I used to be on all the time in the early 2000's.  It's hard to explain but the term multius...

Notes at the beginning of Autumn.

It is officially autumn now, and slowly but surely, we prepare for the coming winter.  It is the time of year when nights are getting longer as the temperature drops. While I find it rather comfortable, my wife would rather turn on the fire to warm her hands. We are both getting older and the chill comes easily now.   It is the time of year when the shadows are growing longer, spiders find themselves in the way and we find ourselves doing a silly dance in an effort to avoid getting them on us after walking into their homes.   Pumpkin spice is everywhere.   I think about autumn as I lug the bags of wood pellets in one by one into my garage.   Last year we ordered four tons, or basically two hundred bags weighing 40 pounds (18.1 Kg) a piece.  Moved from outside the drive to the inside of the garage and restacked, over and over again.  It needs done.  We used three and a half of those tons.   This year I only order...
