Recipe Links.

Generally speaking, I like to put the recipe link right into the blog entry so you can go to the page and print out the recipe yourself.

However, I figured if anyone wanted to go back to a recipe, they may not find that page.    So I give you handy quick link page!  This will be added to as I go and may have more than one recipe for the same item, however the one I made last will always be listed last.   Just clink the link.  **Vegan or Vegetarian friendly**


Cheese Recipes:  Roughly in the order I have made them.


Farmers Cheese.  

Columella's Cheese (Ancient Roman Farmer's cheese) - serve with honey or a similar sweet drizzled over the top of it.  

Paneer -  **Common in Indian cooking and can be used as a meat substitute.**   Another way to make this cheese is here

Ricotta - Often the whey, or liquid part, from a variety of different cheeses can be used to make ricotta. 

Amish ButterMilk Cheese - My first attempt at this failed, probably because I used cultured buttermilk and not Raw buttermilk.   I've not been able to find raw buttermilk and haven't attempted it since.   Soon however.

Amish Cup Cheese - I have made this several times, although it's a soft spreading cheese it's delish!

"So" Cheese - An Ancient cheese from Japan which I've not made, but have written about.   

Feta Cheese - Simple cheese that will allow you to get used to using cultures and brine.  

Halloumi Cheese - Warning:  This particular cheese grills well and is a substitute for the much more difficult Mozzarella cheese.   However it is higher in salt for some reason.  This cheese dates back 2500 years at least.  A more traditional recipe is here

Hrudka - Old traditional Eastern European "Easter Cheese" made with eggs.  

Vegan Parmesan Cheese - **so simple, so delish!  Highly recommended.**

Vegan Smoky Black Pepper Cream Cheese - **I would call this a 3 day cheese.  Let the cashews soak for longer than the recipe calls for (I went 17 hours) and blend, blend, blend.   Let chill 24 hours before serving.** 

Traditional (Dairy) Cream cheese - I never thought I say this, but I preferred the vegan recipe above.

Juustoa or "Bread Cheese"  - This is a fun one to make, and I highly recommend watching a video on how to make it first.  It is also baked in the oven as part of the process.

30 Minute Mozzarella - Fun and quick...but not really a good tasting Mozz.  It's close, just bland.

Stretchy Vegan Mozzarella - **This is much better when cooked on a pizza or part of a dish.  Tastes nothing like Mozzarella when cold.**

Vegan Sesame Cheese -  **I can't stretch the importance of following the recipe for vegan cheeses.  I didn't use sesame seeds (I used tahini and it failed).  I am planning on making this with sesame seeds in the future.**

Fromage Blanc - Great not only on it's own but also with fruit.  

Vegan Cheese ball with beer - **Better than expected but be careful not to make it to wet**

Vegan Goat Cheese - A nut free option that is surprisingly tasty and smooth. 



 Other Recipes - Other things that I have made and have either written about...or not, and roughly in the order in which they were made.  Not all recipes appear in the blog.


"Farts of Portingale" - Thanks to Max Miller of Tasting History for this recipe, which is under his video and I cite directly here.  

Pullum Parthicum (Parthian Chicken) - A chicken recipe from Ancient Rome.  Again thanks to Max Miller.   This is the recipe that got me interested in Lovage and other rare herbs that I've since written about. 

 Basic Hummus - **I've made this without tahini, substituting peanut butter, a few times.**

Ricotta Dumplings with Chevre and Herbs - To be honest the lovely Sue made this using some of the ricotta I made.   The Chevre (Goat's cheese) was store bought.  Maybe one day soon I'll try making Chevre

Seasoned Fries with Beet Garlic Mayo - **Surprisingly good.   Beet powder can be found health food stores and places like Whole Foods**

Basil and Goat Cheese Bites - Recently made this but with store bought goat cheese (and I really do want to make goat cheese) and Basil fresh from the garden come spring, its wonderful.  **can be modified to be vegan/vegetarian** 

Ground Beef and Rice Casserole - I made the quick version.  It's a little bland, I added a bit of hot sauce to the final product, but if you were to cook the rice first it might suck up all the flavor from the mushroom soup.   

Creamy Tahini Garlic Mayo - Exactly what it sounds like.   Try it with your favorite burgers (Highly recommended) - **can be modified to be vegan/vegetarian**

Alabama White Sauce - I was expecting this to be slighter hotter than it was.  It's very mild tasting despite the horseradish and cayenne pepper - **can be modified to be vegan/vegetarian**

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus - **Done in our rarely used Instant Pot.  I used vegetable broth.**  Adding paprika or hot sauce will only help this recipe.  

Turkey Devonshire - Created in my hometown of Pittsburgh, this is truly an amazing sandwich.

Brie and Cheddar Apple Beer Soup - I know it sounds a bit odd but you end up with a creamy cheese soup where the Apples provide a little tang and texture.  I would use more apple than on the recipe however because it gets lost in the taste of the brie.

Homemade Eggnog - I'm a fan of eggnog and this is just really easy, fun and good tasting.  For an alcohol version you can add you own rum or whiskey to taste. 

Ramen Burrito - **It's a quick breakfast or lunch option and can easily be adapted to make it vegan or vegetarian**  NOTE:  Although the recipe calls for 2 cup water, it's better to only use a cup of water.  I generally add a little cheese, cilantro and scallions and a little hot sauce for taste and texture..

Lemon-Basil Zucchini Pasta - Fresh Basil and Zucchini from the garden should make this dish sing.  **Although it calls for goat cheese, you can leave that out or modify it for a vegan/vegetarian dish**

Golden Milk - I don't normally use/have Almond butter, but found myself with a bit of it and this recipe popped up into my feed.  Surprisingly easy and tasty.  **can be modified to be vegan/vegetarian**

Apple Tahini Toast - **A quick and easy breakfast or snack.  It's always nice to use nutty tahini in something.**   A few links with Apple related recipes available on this blog post:  Here

Sesame Tahini Ramen Noodles - **Surprisingly simple to make and not that spicy.**  

Miso Hummus - **A vegetarian hummus that is creamy, salty and has a bold smoky taste.** 

Shaksuka - Personally I'm not a huge fan of tomato, but my wife raved about this simple dish.  

Watermelon with Herbed Goat Cheese - For those hot summer nights.  

Mexican Street Corn Soup -  **Based on Elote,(a guilty pleasure) this is a hearty slightly spiced soup great for colder nights.**

Chickpea Soup - **I recently tried this at a Middle Eastern Restaurant.  I was a bit surprised by the heat but otherwise really enjoyed this.** 

Dandelion Fritters - I'm not made this yet but am hoping to try it in the spring. 

Spicy Peanut butter Ramen - **A pretty simple dish that is very tasty.  However I recommend a low salt ramen noodle.**

Tomato Roasted Onions with Paprika - **Good enough for a main dish**

Orzo with chickpeas - While it's a simple dish to make; the olives, capers and parmesan cheese really do add a depth of flavor.  It's a one pot meal and is vegetarian friendly but not vegan.

Maybe it's time I got serious about solar

  When my wife and I bought this house nearly 6 years ago, we made some upgrades.   We put on a metal roof, replacing the original shingles, replaced the floor in the kitchen, both bathrooms and the downstairs den.  We ended up upgrading the pellet stove (twice!) and added some insulation; one of the jobs I want to do in the coming year is to insulate the garage, mostly to keep the freezers we have in the garage from becoming damaged. It's only in various home improvement shows that the work to improve your home is done all at once and somehow in 1 hour.  For most of us its an ongoing never ending project. One of the important improvements that I've been wanting to make but have kept putting off for various reasons has been solar panels.  Now, I'm thinking that it may be time to least do something. The main reason we have been putting off this improvement was cost and how long it would actually take us to pay off the panels.   I'm 60 years old now...

When it rains....

Bad things they say; happen in groups of three.  Lately we feel that this has been multiplied by at least three, then that by three.  Nor was this the article I was hoping to publish this week, but here it is warts and all! Thankfully there is nothing seriously wrong with my family health wise, and this is nothing that some more hard work and dedication will get us though.  There is one big personal item that I can not go into details on to protect her privacy but what is affecting us right now is that we are again faced with decisions on what to do concerning some major purchases.   I've already written about having to buy a "newer" car but I'm not going to bore you with details about replacing the water heater or unexpected tax bills.  At the beginning of May, our riding lawn mower died.   This in itself is not that big of a deal because I got a good five to six years out of a used machine, and the fact that it has started to give up the ghost ...

Honoring the past - Thinking more about "invasive" plant species.

 Recently I've been giving some thought to invasive species.  I had received both positive and negative feedback on the blog post concerning kudzu and recently I came across a very well hidden, and very small, wild cherry tree while doing some yard work.  Since it's against the house it would have to be removed since the root systems could damage my foundation.   A buddy of mine at work was asking if I was going to transfer it, his logic being that it was a fruiting tree that would not only attract a variety of pollinator's but that the deer would eat the bark and cherries, keeping them away from the garden (which Sue and I swore we were not going to do this year).  It occurred to me that I was going to have to do a slightly better job of identification, since black cherries are native to America , where as other types of cherries are not.  Being able to make a precise identification would be helpful.   I used to be able to identify all these tre...
