So it finally happened....a rant about "bots".

So I got banned from Facebook for 24 hours.

I violated community standards because of a post that was somehow taken out of context.   I don't know or really care about the technical stuff, but basically a "bot" that scans the world wide web looking for content that does not meet "community standards" tagged me.  I would be lying if I didn't say I was little bit upset about it; after all there is a lot worse things that are floating around on Facebook than "They are already here, kill them on sight."

A friend of ours had posted a picture of the spotted lanterfly, which is an invasive species. The department of agriculture here in Pennsylvania has requested that you kill them on sight.   He didn't think they were in this part of the state yet and this was his first siting of one..

The problem that I have is that lots of news stories and articles have already been written about this problem.  Slate magazine even published a bit of a humorous story about the most satisfying ways to kill this little pest.

So given the evidence, I should not be sitting in Facebook jail right now.  I get it though, all those little bots don't understand context, they just understand that certain words are bad.  If I had used smoosh, step on, exterminate or 1001 other words, I would have been fine.

The limits of technology are easy to understand.  A line of code is searching day and night over billions if not trillions of other lines of code for "hate speech" or "violent speech."  I just happened to get caught up in something that was taken completely out of context because of a single word.  If a human would have reviewed it, there simply would have been no ban.  No jail time.  No issue.

Yes, I do understand that I'm making a proverbial mountain out of a mole hill.

I understand the need for this technology, I understand the needs for community standards and yes, I even understand that this tech will only improve with time and will, one day, understand context.  It's just not today.

What bothers me is that I've seen worse than this on Facebook and other social media sites.  I do tend to post a lot on political and news driven sites.  Yes, I am a proud "lefty" but I also have no issue calling out bullshit on my side too.  I consider myself to be "anti stupidity."  So, if your stupid, I'll call you out on it.

Sadly, I've seen and dealt with people and posts that are clearly hate filled or downright racist.  They have learned that it's all in how you word something; it's allowed them to escape the little Dalaks guarding the web.  I've even reported a few...only to see them still posting garbage.

OK, rant over.  I just need to vend and I thank you for letting me do so.  We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

The Home Improvement Blues

When I sit down to write something, I do so for two reasons; the first is that yes, I want to remember my thoughts and feeling about a particular moment in time, so in some ways this blog serves as my journal.  The second reason is that I hope to impart some knowledge or information on.  In the hope that you, gentle reader, might learn something new or, more likely, avoid the mistakes I make.        I leave that decision up to you.       Thus, in some ways you can blame our youngest cat, Bobble, for our upcoming spending a lot of money on window's and other home improvements.       Our first winter in Western Pennsylvania was not really that bad.  This year it seemed we had weeks of sub zero temperatures and several feet of snow.  Our house was physically colder.   Now if your wondering why I'm blaming the cat then please read on dear reader.   ...

The American Climate Corps and other good news

Generally speaking I don't trust the government when it comes to climate.  Here in America we basically have an Oligarchy - where a few rich asssholes are more concerned with maintaining their own power than doing what is best for the country overall.   This has not given me much hope for the future.  In fact, I've reached the conclusion that we simply will not be able to relay on the government going forward.  I'm not a doomsayer but the government at the highest levels simply isn't functioning the way it should and because of that it's simply not going to be able to handle the environmental and other climate related challenges in the future - such as massive immigration caused by failing crops.  Due to their age, most of our leaders are living in a world that no longer exists. So, why does President Biden's American Climate Corps pigued my interest? Two reasons really, it is an understanding that we have to do something sooner than later.  Wel...

A taste of the secret Amish Kitchens

I don't know what attracts me to "Amish Cheese's."  I came across a few recipes while putting about on the interwebs and was taken by them.  They do seem rather simple to make and they require little in actual work but they do require time.  While not exactly a "set it and forget it" cheese, these cheeses often used milk that has spoiled naturally over time or "Clabbered."       Which, considering the Amish lifestyle, makes perfect sense.  The Amish are not a wasteful people.        One cheese that caught my eye is called Amish Cup Cheese.   It is a soft spread where you heated the milk to room temperature first (about 72 F) then let it cool, letting the curds seperate from the whey.    Then you add a bit ingredients and again...you "rested" the cheese for 12 hours before moving on to the next step.  Then, again add some more ingredients then rest for 5 hours before moving on.  It's...
